In a healthy person, the brain and body function as a unit. You think what you feel and vice versa. Within the brain, there is harmony… both the right and left brain interact in all processes. When the body’s needs are left unfulfilled, it is experienced as physical or psychological pain or stress. Stress is the body’s signal to return to balance.
Too much stress can create catastrophic consequences. From the first splitting of cells, the body has a system aimed at maintaining inner balance. The primary way to defend the body against pain is to become unaware of it. For physical pain this entails becoming unconscious when the pain gets too much.
For psychological pain, the level that controls the inflow to consciousness is altered so that we are kept unaware. Outer reality is adjusted to inner truth and vice versa. Perceptions of negativity damaging to the inner system is blocked before it reaches conscious awareness. We cannot be aware of more than the body or psyche will find acceptable.
Thoughts that are too discomforting are transferred to the subconscious and stored on the right side of the brain. This side of the brain has no sense of time and means that everything stored this way is maintained in its exact form for any length of time. Being stored in the subconscious also means a loss of contract with the original pain. This does not mean that it stops having an effect on behavior; it merely ceases to have a direct meaning. This is often experienced by the person as a sense of a strong force, hidden inside, that is beyond their control. Subconscious thought has a stronger impact than ordinary thought because it is out of reach and control of conscious awareness.
Once subconscious thought is revealed, it is usually recognized as a much smaller issue than was originally perceived. Herein lays the awareness that a disturbance which has great impact on the adult person’s life may be caused by a small incident that has grown over the years. Example….Phobias – it is important to keep in mind that continual aim of this defense mechanism is the maintenance of rational behavior.
